Community Clothing didn’t invent the weekend, but the community of factory workers in the North West that we’re proud to be part of certainly helped.
Back in 1843, workers’ rights activist Robert Lowes successfully campaigned to persuade Manchester’s business owners to give workers a half-day off on Saturdays. It was a small change that set a precedent and helped pave the way for the two-day weekend we all know and enjoy today.
In celebration of that wonderful gift to us all, the We Invented the Weekend Festival returns to Salford for a two-day celebration of everything we love doing when we’re not at work. Sports, music, comedy, theatre, dance, crafts, gardening and, of course, a bit of shopping. Community Clothing will be there with their 'Second Hand Shop', packed with great quality, pre-loved clothing at equally great prices. We’ll also be selling a selection of new essentials, including pants and some very exciting socks.
Where: Media City, Salford
When: Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th June
Opening hours: 10am – 5pm on Saturday and 11am – 4pm on Sunday.
Patrick Grant will also be taking part in two festival panels on Saturday:
Clothing Repair and Reuse1:15pm – 2:00pm
Gardening with the RHS Bridgewater team 3:30pm – 4:15pm
Community Clothing is based in Blackburn and today works with 42 UK clothing and textile factory partners. Of these 14 are within an hour of the Manchester pop up and the brand hopes that the event will also help highlight the benefits of local clothing production, both for the many jobs it supports and its role in reducing environmental impact.

ABOUT WE INVENTED THE WEEKEND:
Up until the 19th century, everyone in the UK worked a 6-day week. In 1843, workers’ rights activists launched a campaign to finish early on Saturdays in Greater Manchester. They won, and in doing so, invented the weekend – a gift to workers the world over. We Invented the Weekend is marking this enormous achievement with a new and imaginative free festival from Salford. One massive, colourful, exciting weekend of music, theatre, sport, workshops, dancing, laughs, and more to celebrate the joy of free time.
